The Apple rumor mill has been rife with talk that the home button will be dropped from future models of the iPad and iPhone—maybe even this year’s iPad 2.0 and iPhone 5. The beta version of iOS 4.3 released to developers Wednesday contains a batch of multi-touch gestures that could possibly replace the home button. While it could happen, here are a few reasons why it probably won’t.

The home button makes it easier for newbies to get started.
Imagine you’ve never used a smartphone or tablet computer. Then you open your Christmas or birthday present and find a shiny new iPad or iPhone. What do you see? A blank screen and a button. What do you do? Hit the button, of course. The screen lights up and you see icons with labels. You start touching them one by one, and see what the device is all about.


Do we really expect people to be born knowing how to pinch and swipe? And the home button makes it easy to reboot or kill apps. Really easy. When an app crashes, it would require more effort to reboot without the home button.
