Okay so there’s a crazy rumor going around now, which all started by a post over at Boy Genius Report. They have apparently been informed that the reason Apple just added multitouch gestures for the iPad in the latest iOS 4.3 beta is because the iPad will be losing the home button. Wow… is there much truth to this? Find out after the break.

So BGR reports, from their sources, that at some point in time, will remove the home button from the iPad’s design. Instead of button taps, you will use new multitouch gestures to navigate to the home screen and also to launch the app switcher.
Boy Genius Report said:

In addition to the home button disappearing from the iPad, we’re told that this change will make its way over to the iPhone as well. Our source said Apple employees are already testing iPads and iPhones with no home buttons on the Apple campus, and it’s possible we will see this new change materialize with the next-generation iPad and iPhone devices set to launch this year.

Steve Jobs had once said that didn’t want any physical buttons on the original iPhone at first, will he get his wish?
Well, while we love the minimalist idea of a buttonless iPhone – we just can’t see Apple going this route, not anytime soon – anyway. We’ll explain why, over the page.
There are at least a couple reasons why Apple dropping the home button won’t happen this year, though. One reason is that the new multitouch gestures introduced in iOS 4.3 beta are still being tested for compatibility and are considered a developer “preview” of new functionality. This suggests that the new gestures may not even be ready for release in iOS 4.3. It’s possible that these gestures won’t be available to end users until later versions of iOS are released.
It’s worth noting that these gestures are currently only available on the iPad. Using four or five fingers on an iPhone would be exceedingly difficult, if not impossible—the iPad just has more room to make such gestures comfortable to use. Having to use four or five fingers at a time would also rule out one-handed operation.
