How much is the data on your iPad worth to you? If you’ve just been using it for personal use, maybe not much, but for business users, data recovery can be a life-or-death proposition.
Data recovery is big business for companies that depend on the security of what’s stored on their computers, but for most of us, it’s not something we deal with regularly. But as more iPads are being used by businesses, data becomes a major issue. At the recent 2011 Macworld Expo, DriveSavers announced a new service to retrieve data from iPads—for a price.
The company claims it can perform a “logical” recovery in 24 to 48 hours, while retrieval from a physically damaged iPad requires more time. The process sounds rather daunting, as Chris “Dr Data” Bross of DriveSavers explains. The flash-based storage of the iPad requires different recovery methods than those used for computer hard drives. “iPhones and iPads based on Apple’s A4 chip include hardware-based encryption performed by the flash controller at a level lower than the filesystem itself, which makes our job even harder.”
Bross expects to be working on more iPads as the Apple tablet gains acceptance with business users. “Our clients are beginning to deploy iPads in the enterprise. They want to be assured we can help them when something goes wrong, and with the extensive experience we have working with flash-based storage, we’re ready.”
