Opinions and rumors have raged all week on whether the iPad 2 will have greatly increased screen resolution, and exactly how much. Now reports claim that the touted 2048×1536 resolution is coming—but not yet.
Those rumors that the iPad 2 coming in April will have a screen resolution of 2048×1536 always seemed a little too good to be true, even though there are clues buried in the second beta version of iOS 4.3 that point in that direction. The bad news is that the 4x resolution isn’t likely to be included in the iPad 2—the good news is that it may show up in a future version. Digitimes out of Taiwan claims that Apple will boost the iPad 2’s resolution to “widen the company’s technology gap with its competitors.”
But will they boost it that much? Tom Mainelli of research firm IDC doesn’t think so. He told PCWorld: “I think the Digitimes story probably got the resolution right, but the iPad version wrong. Our sources say Apple has requested that manufacturers begin work on displays with that resolution for the iPad 3. I don’t believe anybody is ready to produce that resolution in volumes at this point. And Apple is going to require huge volumes for the iPad 2.”
